EVOLVING GOALS

Past Goals

When I entered the Master's of Educational Technology (MAET) program I had largely centered my goals around my professional aspirations. I wanted to become a better teacher, collaborate with other educators, and learn to incorporate technology in my classroom. In my application to the program, I wrote about wanting to engage students with technology in innovative ways. Without a doubt, I have achieved these initial goals.

In the MAET program, I remixed lessons to integrate technology in purposeful, creative, and engaging ways. In one math lesson, I used Tinkercad and a 3D printer to have students design and build a geometric shape. I collaborated with other teachers to develop a detailed plan to address wicked problems that the education system currently faces. I joined an online professional learning community that is filled with passionate, creative, and informed teachers and learners. I have learned so much,  and I continue to set new, and higher goals for myself.

Changing Goals

My MAET experience has exceeded my expectations, and my goals have changed to affect a wider audience, and are now more personal in nature. In my initial goal statement, I spoke about wanting to use technology to create. This continues to be true. I want to be an artist that contributes to the world. I want to put my voice and my vision out into the world, to inspire others, and to leave a positive legacy. In all areas of my life, I want to be a creator. I want to be a maker. I hope that my passion and creations can inspire others to create more in their own lives.

Changing Vision

My views in regard to education have changed too. I started the program when my son was 6 months old. I have often asked myself, “What kind of school do I want him to go to?” and “What kind of teacher do I want teaching him?”. These are powerful questions. All parents and teachers should strive to build dream schools for our children.

To me, a dream school helps students find and share their passions. A dream school is relevant, and encourages students to connect to, and share with the world outside of themselves. Technology is a tool that connects people, and students must be equipped to communicate and collaborate with others to solve real-world problems. Technology also provides many tools for creation. A dream school expects students to dream, invent, build, create, and make. A dream school gives students opportunities to use real-world tools, and even create new tools.

After reflecting on my experience in the program, I believe that getting my Master’s degree from MSU has been a positive transformational journey for me. Now more than ever I believe in the power of following and developing passions. I believe in building confidence through building creations. My ultimate goal is to keep creating, and to keep sharing with others.
